search engine optimization tools

Now that I have formed the habit of regularly writing a blog entry, I want to see if I can drive traffic to my site as part of the experiment.

Although blogs are inherently searchable because Google indexes them frequently -- just because you build it, it doesn't mean they'll come. Becasue consumers and business decision makers begin their research with a search engine, the ability to influence the credible medium of organic search, which does not carry the stigma of advertising, is critical to what people will find about you or your company. This strategy is called Search Engine Optimization or SEO and, when done correctly, can increase your site’s visibility on search engines. Ultimately, optimizing your site or blog can enable you to manage reputation, stay competitive and generate revenue.

SEO is primarily based on creating relevant content to attract more readers. To help me with this process, I installed a keyword suggestion tool called HitTail. In the interest of full disclosure, HitTail is a web-based solution the company I work for developed and markets.

What’s unique about HitTail is that it tracks in REAL-TIME the words people are using to find your blog or website. It then extracts the underperforming terms, those that are found in the long tail, into a table of suggestions. If you write about these topics you will increase your site's position in search results on those words or phrases. HitTail has a free version. Check out the demos on the website for more information.

Google has several useful tools for Bloggers and Webmasters (Google Trends and Google Analytics), but other free and easy to use products that can help you gather intelligence and learn how your site is performing are CrazyEgg and Clicky.
